Surviving your fishing trip - Facts about long drives
This post brought to you by InsuranceHunter. All opinions are 100% mine.
I love going on road trips with my friends to find new fishing spots, and sometimes we'll drive 15 + hours to try our luck on new waters. We leave early and use my truck, so usually I take the first shift. The problem is that I'm really not a morning person and it tends to take me some time to properly wake up. This means that for a good hour on the road, I'm really not as focused as I should be. Although I've often said to myself " I really should just let someone else drive until I feel fit and ready," I don't ! Why ? Well, I can't really answer that, I can only imagine it's a mix of being stubborn and a reluctance to allow someone else to drive my vehicle.
This brings me to the point of this post, how many people really fall asleep at the wheel ? Well, the answer is actually a little worriesome, as I found out recently when I read this survey done in Ontario by this online auto insurance company. The Neglected Driver Survey, an online study by Angus Reid on behalf of InsuranceHunter.ca, polled 1,003 Ontario parents with children under the age of 12 who take family road trips. The study demonstrates a scary fact: most drivers (especially males) do not stop driving when they are fatigued, in fact 64% of men have continued driving on a road trip when tired. It gets worse, as according to the study, 30% of men have nodded off behind the wheel. Wow ! That means that there is a good chance that on your next roadtrip, if you're not falling asleep at the wheel, someone else on the road with you probably is !
If you're interested in reading all the results of this study, you can find it here: Insurance Hunter’s safety survey. And remember, it's always better to arrive late rather than not at all.
Big St-Lawrence Bass
It's well known that the St-Lawrence river has some big-ass Bass, here's a video of our last trip to prove it.
Sturgeon: Up close and personal

Fly Tying
The crew at FHF just wanted to remind you to check out our Fly Tying section before you hit the water this Spring
http://flyhighfishing.blogspot.ca/p/fly-tying.htmlTenkara
Tenkara fishing originated in Japan over 200 years ago, the first reference to tenkara fly-fishing was in 1878. Tenkara fly-fishing originated with professional fishermen in the mountain streams of Japan who found it an effective method of harvesting the local fish.
Originally the rod was simply a bamboo/cane rod, which was cut and treated, but unlike contemporary western bamboo rods, they were not "manufactured" (i.e. split and glued back together). Unlike in the western fly-fishing tradition where anglers used heavy wooden rods, in Japan anglers always used bamboo, which is readily available and very light. Because of its light weight, Japanese anglers were able to use very long bamboo rods and reach as far as needed without the need to develop reels for the short rods developed in the west
Here is a nice video about Tenkara from Tenkara USA

The GoPro approach
The GoPro has been around for a little while now, so most people are familiar with the product, but do we realize the beauty of this wonderful camera ? Before the GoPro was available any fisherman who wished to capture their trophy catch would have to either settle for a still shot or risk dropping a very expensive video camera in the water. GoPro has changed the game with this 100% waterproof, HD, rugged and compact video camera that can be worn on your head or fixed to a helmet or even your car with ease, they even have a special harness that is designed for fisherman ;)
The best part about this little beauty is that it can even take underwater video, now that puts a whole new perspective on things, right ? The name says it all, with the GoPro, you Go Pro ! Here is a little example of how great this product is, because where this footage is taken you need all your hands free, enjoy and please share your feedback with us.
Lifeline
If you've ever gone Wading in strong waters, you quickly realize that the best safety equipment to bring is a friend. The number of times that I have been saved from a tight spot or saved another by reaching out and grabbing on is proof. Despite staffs, waders, belts and boots, nothing beats a helping hand. Even though most of us are aware of these dangers we don't always stay close together, we wander off, focused on our prize and should any problem arise, no one will hear you ! FHF solution...Walkie Talkies. With these little hand-held radios you can stay in touch with your friends for fun and safety.
Most are good up to 26 km last 8hrs before needing to be charged and are quite compact. The average cost is $50, waterproof models may run up to $150

New Boat
Well after much thought I finally purchased a boat. You see the reason I hesitated so long is because I live in the city in an apartment and have no place to store a boat and trailer. I would also have to get a hitch for my Jetta, not exactly the best vehicle for towing anyway, so what to do ? I knew I wanted a "Real" boat not some little recreational floating device, so that added to my problem, then it hit me, why not an Inflatable. I immediately realized that I was now faced with dozens of companies that each make dozens of models so where to start ?
I wanted something that was NOT made in China, no offense but I wanted to get back to shore in one piece and China's manufacturing reputation has been established. My first instinct was the famous Zodiac brand which is from France or should I say was manufactured in France, much to my dismay however, 90% of new Zodiacs are made where...China ! Zodiac and most other big names such as Avon(UK) or Mercury(US) now make all their boats in China except for their high-end models and I'm not paying 20K and up for a Dinghy !
Just as I thought my plans were foiled and I would have to settle for a China made boat I discovered an up and coming player in the inflatable boat world, BRIG. BRIG inflatables were not only less expensive and more well equipped than other comparable boats, they were made in Europe, albeit the Ukraine...but it's still better than China ! BRIG was started by former Soviet Aerospace engineers so I figured they should be able to make an inflatable boat...right ? The product reviews and reputation among dealers was another factor that sold me, so I am now the proud owner of a BRIG and am very satisfied, plus I can store it in my closet...not bad !
Here is a short video of my boat in action with a 1985 Evinrude 10hp and she moves pretty good ;) Enjoy and please share your comments with us.
``No fly zone``!
With much post-purchase anticipation, I hit the waters on a little river called the Yamaska, near Granby, Quebec.
With a little twist, I thought that I had successfully "turned on" my strike indicator. Well much to my idealistic dismay, a couple of casts later, my strike indication capabilities were "turned-off".
No thanks to Orvis, the "turn-on strike indicator" falls into uncle Stretch`s ``No fly zone``!
Try it for yourself and let us know.

Less bass, more class
I know, I know, this all sounds a little harsh and I know that there are a bunch of great fly shows like the New Flyfisher, Fly Nation and Sport Fishing On The fly. We do love many of the other shows too ! What's not to love about Hookin' up with Mariko, we're all about Urban Fishing and you gotta appreciate Lunkerville's true nature.
The only time we can't stand WFN is when some over zealous nut job is yankin' out Bass like a catapult and tossin' them back in the water like a piece of trash.
We're not askin' for much, just a little sanity and a touch of class

A bottle opener, eye clearing needle and wide no slip grip make it a great mono clipper + the convenience of an opener.

The one that got away, thank heavens !
Open Season in Quebec
After a long Winter, Trout season is finally open today ( 27 April ) and I can't wait to get out on the water. Time to get out all those sleepy Flies, dust off the gear and get everything ready.
Spring Perch
Here's a great video of early Spring Perch in the St-Lawrence River. Enjoy and please share your feedback with us.
Spring discovery
The Bass river is a beautiful little body of perfect Trout water located in the region of St-Jerome.
I was told by locals that the good fishing will begin around May, which would explain may lack of bites, but I am super pleased to find such a river only 45 min north of Montreal.
Brook Trout are the main fish present and I look forward to tight lines on the river.
Until then my patience shall have to stay strong,as anglers itch has set in full force ;)
